284 km Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road Project Details

Intro & Timeline of Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road Project

Its been decades since the capital city of Karnataka, Bangalore is facing huge problems with traffic jams because of which, on a regular basis the people of silicon valley have to face heavy traffic congestion leading to more consumption of time & fuel.

The most important reason behind the traffic congestion issue in the city is the current road infrastructure system which failed to be upgraded at right time. If we look at the current situation, the heavy traffic on National highways like NH-648, NH-48, NH-275, NH-948, NH-75, NH-44 & State Highways like SH-87, SH-3, SH-9, SH-85, SH-35, SH-104, etc passes through the interior of the Bangalore city. The maximum traffic on these National and State Highways isn’t intended to be passed through the B’lor city.

If there is a construction of a satellite town ring road at the outermost periphery of the city then this unintended traffic will be able to bypass the main city & there will be a bit of relief in the current traffic congestion issue.

To solve such traffic issues, Satellite Town Ring Road & Individual Town Ring Road projects have been in discussion for many years. It was year 2005 when Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road Project was first announced by Karnataka Government after which, technical studies were also done for the project. Due to insufficient funds, the work of the project could not get started & the project went under cold storage.

After a few years past 2005, the demand for Satellite Town Ring Road got intense and in Year 2011, construction work on Dabaspet to Hoskote section of Satellite Town Ring Road was awarded to Transstroy Ltd but the progress of construction work was very poor. Due to improper funds, capitals & various other reasons the contractor failed to develop this section of STRR. This resulted in the termination of the construction company in Year 2016 & ultimately once again due to incompetency of the contractor & improper funds, Karnataka Government failed to develop STRR.

In year 2016, central government of India launched an ambitious programme viz Bharatmala Pariyojana under which construction of thousands kilometers of Roads, Highways, Expressways, Economic corridors were proposed. This time, Karnataka government wanted to shift & include the Satellite Town Ring Road project under Bharatmala Pariyojana & to make this happen, chief minister himself & other delegations met with the Minister of Roads Transports & Highways.

Finally in Year 2017, Nitin Gadkari included the Bengaluru’s much awaited Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) under Bharatmala Pariyojana Programme with a condition where Karnataka government has to bear 30 percent cost for Land Acquisition work.

Route Alignment of Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road

The proposed Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road project will be a ring road type highway around the extreme outer of the city which will also connect 8 towns along its route.

The STRR highway will start from NH4 in Dabaspet. Moving ahead, it will pass through Doddabelagavi, Doddaballapura, Devanahalli & will reach Hoskote. From here, it will cross Bangalore Chennai Expressway near Denahalli, and then pass through Chikka Tirupati , Sonnur & will then enter Tamil Nadu state where it will pass through the periphery of Hosur City of Krishnagiri District. Moving ahead, passing near Hosur airport the STRR will again enter Karnataka where it will cross Anekkal, Kanakpura, Ramnagara, Magadi, Gudemanahalli & will be connected again with Dabaspet thereby forming a complete loop of Satellite Town Ring Road.

Individual Town Ring Road connectivity with Satellite Town Ring Road

Along with this STRR, Individual Town Ring Road (ITRR) projects are also under pipeline under which 8 towns near Bengaluru city have been selected viz. Doddaballapura, Devanahalli, Hoskote, Anekal, Kanakpura, Ramnagara, Magadi & Nelamangala. Under ITRR project, ring roads will be constructed on the periphery on these selected towns and along with satellite town ring road individual towns will also be connected with each other.

Salient Features & Sections of Bangalore Satellite Town Ring Road

STRR Project will be a combination of greenfield and brownfield highways. The overall length of this STRR will be approx 284 km. Along with this the cumulitive length of ITRR will be approx 163 Kms.

The pavement or carriageway of STRR will be constructed as flexible type. The highway is designed in such manner that vehicles can move with a speed of 100 kmph.

The length of STRR in Karnataka state will be 243 Kms whereas in Tamil Nadu, it will cover 42 Kms.

The formation of Complete loop of STRR includes 5 sections. The first section starts from Dabaspet to Hoskote, second section from Dabaspet to Ramnagara ( Phase I ), third section from Ramnagara to Peddamadhagondapalli, fourth section from Peddamadhagondapalli to Tamil Nadu border and fifth section is some portion of National Highway no 207 which has to be realigned.

After proper traffic analysis, it is decided to initially construct some portions of the STRR as 6 lanes and some sections as 4 lane highway.

Existing Dabaspet Doddaballapura Hoskote section will be a brownfield type highway & the length of the same will be approx 80 Kms. Due to land unavailability in this area, the Right of way for the highway in this section is kept as 45 m. Under this section, existing 2 lane highway is being upgraded to a 4 lane highway with a provision of future extension up to 6 lanes. The construction of this section is being carried out under Hybrid Annuity Mode.

The section from Dabaspet to Ramnagra section (Phase -I) is being constructed as a greenfield highway with fresh alignment. Length of this section will be approx 82 Kms. This section is currently being constructed as a 4 lane highway with a provision of future extension up to 6 lanes. The Right of way of this section is kept as 70m.

The section from Ramnagara, Karnataka to Pedda Madhagondapalli, Tamil Nadu ( Phase-II ) will have a length of 58 Kms. This section of STRR will be constructed as a 6 lane greenfield type highway. Throughout, the Right of Way of this section will be kept as 70 mts expect the portion of Banerghata National Park where the ROW is kept as 28.5 Kms.

The section from Peddamadhagondapalli to Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border will have a length of 42 Kms. This section of STRR will also be constructed as a 6 lane green field type highway. The Right of Way of this section is kept as 75 m
