Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway Complete Details of Project

Introduction of Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway

In order to cop up with the existing transport and logistics problem & to provide better and fast connectivity between the cities across the country, the Central Government of India launched the ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana in year 2016 with the Ministry of Roads Transport & Highway as its implementation agency.

Under the Bharatmala programme, construction of thousands kilometers of roads, highways, expressways, economic corridors etc were taken into the plan. Currently, under this programme, many expressways, highways etc like Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Ambala-Kotputli Expressway, Raipur Visakhapatnam Expressway, Amritsar Jamnagar Expressway, Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway etc are under construction across the country.

In the same series, another economic corridor which is Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Expressway is also under construction & in this article, we will understand this expressway project in detail where we will talk about some technical details, project importance, route alignment, overall length of this expressway, material requirement, project cost, types & number of structures proposed under this project, Land Acquisition Area, Additional Spur Expressways, current progress, working contractors, packages, expected completion date etc. So read this article till the end for complete information.

Delhi Dehradun Economic Corridor is also known as Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway. This project was approved for the construction in year 2020 under Bharatmala Pariyojana. Foundation stone of Delhi Dehradun Expressway has been laid in year 2021 by MoRTH minister Nitin Gadari after which in Dec 2021 the foundation stone was laid again by PM Modi.Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway will be a combination of Greenfield & Brownfield Expressway.

Importance & Need of Delhi Dehradun Expressway

Currently the distance between Delhi to Dehradun is approx 245 Km & to cover this distance, it currently takes around 6 to 7 hours of time on the normal days whereas during the tourist season , the same distance takes around 7-8 hours due to traffic congestion.

After completion of the Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway, the distance between Delhi & Dehradun will be reduced to 30-35 km from the existing distance. With the facility of high speed handling pavements & fully access controlled expressway, Delhi to Dehradun can be reached only in 2.5 hours. In other words, we can say that the current travel time will almost cut to half & also there will be huge savings of time and fuel.

Route Alignment of Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway (Districts, Village List)

This expressway will travel along National capital Delhi, Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand states. In the National Capital, it will start from East Delhi & will then pass Shahdara, North East Delhi. Entering Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad, the expressway alignment will pass Baghpat, Muzaffar Nagar, Shamli, Saharanpur districts & will then reach Dehradun in Uttarakhand. In short, the expressway will pass through 3 districts in Delhi, 5 districts in Uttar Pradesh & 1 District in Uttarakhand.

Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway

If we look a bit deep in the route alignment, this expressway will start from Delhi Meerut Expressway (NE-3/NH9) Near Akshardham in East Delhi. Moving ahead, it will pass through Geeta Colony. The expressway will enter Uttar pradesh via Khajuri Khas of North Delhi. Entering UP, it will pass through Mandola Vihar, Khekra in Ghaziabad, Ahera, Tatiri, Sarurpur, Hilwadi Bijrol, Tikri Rural in Baghpat, Biral, Faguna in Muzaffar Nagar Dist. , Bhaju, Butrada, Babri, Hasanpur Lohari in Shamli, Jaroda Panda, Badgaon, Ambehta Chand Mushtakam, Tahsnipur, Saharanpur Bypass , Gagal Heri, Chhutmalpur, Biharigarh, Ganeshpur in Saharanpur District. Expressway will the enter Uttarakhand & pass through Mohand, Daatkali tunnel & will then finally reach Dehradun.

Salient Features & Construction Phases of Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway

Overall Length of Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway will be approx 210 Kms. This Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor is designed in such a way that vehicles can move with a maximum speed of 100 Kmph. Throughout its stretch, the expressway will have flexible pavement (constructed using Bitumen). Right of way of the greenfield section of the expressway will be 70m where in the brownfield sections, the ROW will vary according to the land availability & ROW of existing highways. Near Forest Reserve Areas, ROW is restricted as 25m.

The project is being constructed in phase manner under which it is divided in a total of 4 phases.

Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun Expressway phases

Phase-1 starts from the Delhi Meerut Junction near Akshardham in Delhi to Eastern Peripheral Expressway Junction in Khekra of Baghpat District, UP. The overall length of this section is 32 km. This section will be constructed as a brownfield type expressway under which the existing highways on the section will be upgraded to expressway standards with 12 lanes (6-lane main expressway + 6-lane service road ). A 6.4 Km elevated corridor is also proposed under the phase 1. The existing bridges and structures will be widened according to the 12 lanes highway.

Phase-2 starts from Eastern Peripheral Expressway Junction in Khekra of Baghpat District to Saharanpur Bypass. The total length of this phase is 118 km. This section of the economic corridor will be constructed as a complete Greenfield Access Controlled Expressway with fresh alignment of 6 lanes.

Under phase 2 greenfield section , there will be the construction of 1 Railway Over Bridge, 20 Nos Minor Bridge, 5 Nos Minor Bridge cum SVUP, 8 Nos Box Culverts, 3 Nos Box Culverts cum SVUP, 60 Nos Light Vehicular Underpass, 180 Nos Culverts. Under this 118 Km section, this expressway will cross Eastern Peripheral Expressway, NH 709B, NH 334B, NH 709 A, NH 709 AD & will connect with them through a cloverleaf type interchange.

Phase-3 starts from Saharanpur Bypass up to Ganeshpur. The total length of the expressway under this phase is 40 Km. This section has already been constructed as a brownfield type expressway under which existing highway were upgraded to 4 lanes of expressway standards along with the construction of necessary underpasses, service roads, barriers etc.

Phase-4 starts from Ganeshpur, UP to Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The overall length of this section will be 20 km. This section will also be developed as a brownfield expressway under which existing 2 lane highway will be upgraded to a 4 lane expressway. It will be constructed in such a way that it can be extended up to 6 lanes in future.

This Phase 4 of Delhi Saharan Dehradun Expressway is believed to be the toughest and most challenging section of the project. The reason why the construction of this section becomes so challenging is that the majority part of this section passes through the hilly terrain & forest reserves of Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand. Because of mountainous terrain, it becomes really difficult and challenging to perform construction activities.

Since some part of the expressway passes close to forest reserve and Rajaji National Park, approx 12 km wildlife elevated corridor is being constructed for the smooth and seamless movement of wildlife animals. This wildlife corridor will have a clear height of approx 5-6 m from ground so that big animals like elephants can also move freely. This wild life corridor will be not only the biggest extended wildlife corridor in India, but also it will be the biggest in Asia. Along with this, there is also a provision of construction of twin tunnel of approx 2.5 km.

There is a provision of construction of way side amenities on every 25 to 30 km where there will be services of administrative buildings, parking area, rest area etc. Along with this Bus/truck lay byes, Emergency Calling Booths, Fuel Stations etc will also be installed on regular intervals. The expressway also has a provision of arrangements for rain water harvesting on every 500 m intervals & total of 400 water recharge points.

Closed Toll Mechanism will be adopted on this expressway with the help of which, the commuters will be charged for only the distance traveled on the expressway.
