Nagpur Mumbai Expressway or Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg’s official name is Hindu Hrudaya Samrat Balasaheb Thackrey. This under construction expressway is also known as Nagpur Mumbai Super Communication Expressway. This expressway is a flagship project of Maharashtra Government and as its name says, the expressway is being constructed between the cities Nagpur and Mumbai. Overall length of the expressway will be around 701 km.

Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg project was launched in year 2016 by the government of Maharashtra with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd (MSRDC) as the responsible agency for the construction.

The work for Land acquisition of the Nagpur Mumbai Expressway aka Samruddhi Mahamarg got initiated in year 2017 and the construction work for the same got started in year 2019.

Salient Features of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway (Samruddhi Mahamarg)

Samruddhi mahamarg is being constructed as a 701 kilometers long 6 lane expressway with a provision to be extended up to 8 lanes in future as per the traffic growth. And keeping this in mind, the land acquisition for this project has been done.

Carriageway type, ROW, Max Speed & Proposed Structures of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway

The carriageway of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway is designed in such a way that the additional lanes in future can be constructed in the median portion, which is at the center of the expressway and to achieve this, the Right of Way (ROW) of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is kept as 120 m wide.

Maximum portion of this super communication highway is being constructed as Rigid Pavement which is commonly known as Concrete Road or Paved Quality Concrete Road (PQC Road).

Nagpur Mumbai expressway is designed for a maximum speed of 120 km per hour and will allow the vehicles to move with a speed of 120 Kilometers per Hour on its carriageway.

It is certainly the first Expressway in India where the construction of 9 Green Bridges and 6 Tunnels are happening simultaneously. With help of such structures, the wildlife movement will not be hampered due to the construction of the expressway and in fact, these structures will provide a smooth and seamless movement of wildlife animals.

Throughout the stretch of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway 57 Nos Flyovers & Viaducts, 32 Major Bridges, 8 Nos Railway Over Bridges, 274 Nos Minor Bridges, 65 Nos Vehicular Overpass, 189 Vehicular Underpass, 120 Nos Light Vehicular Underpass, 209 Nos Cattle & Pedestrian Underpass, 3 Nos of Wildlife Underpass, 3 Wildlife Overpass, 19 Nos Pedestrian Overpass, 20 Nos Canal Bridges, 671 Nos Box culverts, 24 Interchanges and 6 Tunnel type structures are being constructed. With the help of such structures, the traffic flow on the Nagpur Mumbai Expressway will be smooth and seamless.

Tunnel Details of Mumbai Nagpur Expressway (Samruddhi Mahamarg)

Among the 6 tunnels proposed under this project, one of the important tunnels is being constructed in Kasaraghat near Igatpuri. This tunnel will be of 8 kilometer long and it is being constructed as a twin type tunnel with each tunnel having a width of 17.5m. After its successful construction, this tunnel will be India’s Widest Tunnel and will also be the Longest Tunnel on any expressway across India.

Since it is being developed as a twin-type tunnel, 2 separate tubular structures are constructed with 3 lanes on each highway. Having 3 lanes on each tube, it will have overall 6 lanes in both tubes. The tunnels are being constructed using Austrian Tunneling Method.

Land Acquisition details & Project Model of Samruddhi Mahamarg

For the construction of Nagpur Mumbai super communication expressway, a total of 24,255 acres (9,900 Ha) of land has been acquired by the government of Maharashtra.

For the construction work, the samruddhi mahamarg is developed under Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) Model.

Toll Plazas & other facilities at Nagpur Mumbai Expressway

A total of 21 Way Side Amenities are under construction which are located at regular intervals. These amenities will provide facility of AC Restaurants, Toilets, Washrooms, Food courts, Minor Repair Shop, Dhaba, Dormitory, Toilet Blocks, Fuel Stations etc.

Along with the WSA, CCTV Cameras, Emergency calling stations etc will also be installed on regular intervals.

The Nagpur Mumbai Expressway has a total of 26 Toll Plazas under which, 2 are main toll plaza whereas remaining 24 are ramp or loop type toll plazas which will be constructed at interchanges (entry exit)

In order to make Mumbai Nagpur Expressway eco friendly and to provide electric vehicle friendly infrastructure, along the 701 km stretch of Samruddhi Mahamarg EV Charging stations are being installed at the selected 21 locations. These EV charging stations will be spread around 6 to 8 hectares of area.

Route Alignment Map of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway aka Samruddhi Mahamarg

Through out its stretch, the super communication expressway will cross 10 districts of Maharashtra viz. Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Buldhana, Washim, Jalna, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Nashik & Thane ( which is near Mumbai). This Nagpur Mumbai expressway will connect 392 villages of 26 Talukas falling under these 10 districts of the state.

After its construction, it provide a direct connectivity between Nagpur and JNPT Port, Mumbai.

This expressway will not only get connected with the mentioned 10 districts, but it will also get connected with 14 additional surrounding districts through the connecting highways and feeder routes. These additional 14 districts will be Gondia, Gadhchiroli, Chandrapur, Yavatmal, Hingoli, Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Akola, Jalgaon, Dhule, Palghar and Raigad.

This expressway will play an important role in the development of these districts.

Proposed Toll fares on Nagpur Mumbai Expressway aka Samruddhi Mahamarg

The toll collection mechanism on this expressway is designed in such a way that a traveler has to pay the toll fare for only the actual distance covered on the expressway. The end to end (Start to End) toll fare for cars on Mumbai Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg is kept as 1,212 Rs.

Important updates of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway (Samruddhi Mahamarg)

Another important information regarding this expressway is that in year 2021, a greenfield 6 lane access controlled 225 km long Eastern Maharashtra Expressway project was announced by the government of Maharashtra which will be an extension of the Nagpur Mumbai Expressway. Under this new expressway, Nagpur end of Samruddhi Mahamarg will be extended up to Gadhchiroli. The alignment of 225 km Eastern Maharashtra expressway will start from Nagpur and will pass through Bhandara, Gondia and will reach Gadhchiroli.

Currently, the detailed project report of Eastern Maharashtra Expressway is under preparation phase.

Once the completion of Nagpur Mumbai Expressway (701 km) and Eastern Maharashtra Expressway (225 km), Maharashtra state will have a 926 Kilometers long 6 lane access controlled expressway from Mumbai to Gadhchiroli.

Certainly, after the successful construction of 701 kilometers long Nagpur Mumbai Expressway, the socio and economic development of not only the surrounding areas of the expressway but also the country will get a strong push. Considering these factors in mind, Maharashtra State Government has launched another flagship project named as Krishi Samruddhi Nagar New Town Project.

Under Krishi Samruddhi Nagar New Town Project, it is proposed to construct and develop 20 New towns / Industrial Hubs near the Nagpur Mumbai Super Communication Expressway and for this, the Maharashtra state government has already initiated from the policy level and under the provision of Maharashtra Regional and Township Planning Act, 1966 an authority viz. New Town Development Authority (NTDA) is also formed.

Under this new town project, the establishment of the industrial hubs are proposed on the major intersection / junctions of Nagpur Mumbai Super Communication Expressway. Also these industrial hubs will be developed in such a way that the distance between the successive hub will be around 30-40 km.

Current Status of Nagpur Mumbai Samruddhi Mahamarg

Currently, the construction work pace on Nagpur Mumbai Expressway is in its full swing. However during the covid-19 period, the progress of this project was also slightly got affected. According to the reports, currently the construction work of this highway has been completed by more than 73%.

Initially, MSRDC announced that it will first start the Nagpur-Shirdi stretch of Mumbai Nagpur Expressway for the public. But due to certain reasons, the work on this stretch was pending. According to new reports, now the Vijaypur-Sindkhed Raja Stretch and Shelu Bazar-Nagpur section will be first opened for the public. The combined length of these two stretches is approx 360 km and it is expected that the rest of the expressway will become operational by March 2023.

Prime Minister Modi to Inaugurate Samruddhi Mahamarg on 11-December 2022

The country’s longest greenfield Expressway project, the eagerly anticipated Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway, will be officially opened on December 11,2022  by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Samruddhi Mahamarg, a six-lane access-controlled highway, is one of the most ambitious road projects ever started in India.

PM Modi will officially open the Samruddhi Expressway between Nagpur and Mumbai. He will dedicate the 500-kilometer route that connects Nagpur with Shirdi, which has already been finished. The remaining stretch, which will link Shirdi with Mumbai, would be finished in six months, according to Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis.

In other words, it can be said that the construction work of Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg aka Nagpur Mumbai Expressway will be fully completed in Year 2023.
