121 Km Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway Project Information, Route Alignment and Status Update

Introduction to Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway:

Kerala, known for its lush landscapes and cultural heritage, stands at a crossroads where development beckons. The state’s highways, however, paint a different picture – out of 1781.5 km of National Highways (NHs), only a mere 200.0 km boasts a 4-lane infrastructure. The remaining 84% of NHs languish with 2-lane roads. This stark reality calls for urgent intervention to ensure Kerala’s holistic progress. The proposed project, a part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, comes as a beacon of change – a four/six lane Greenfield highway connecting Palakkad to Kozhikode. This transformative endeavor holds the promise of not just reducing travel time but also interconnecting two vital NHs of Kerala – NH-544 and NH-66.

Proposed Route Alignment of Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway :

The project’s journey begins at Ch 0+000 in Marutharode Village, Palakkad district, and culminates at Ch 121+006 at Olavanna Village in Kozhikode district, connecting NH-544 to NH-66. A testament to engineering innovation, this alignment isn’t just about convenience; it signifies connectivity – the bridge between Palakkad and Kozhikode, a link that has the power to transform the state’s transportation landscape.

Proposed Structures on the Expressway:

Elevating the region’s infrastructure, the Palakkad-Kozhikode Greenfield Highway Project envisions grade-separated structures at intersections, start and end locations, and both State Highways (SH) and National Highways (NH). This strategic approach translates into road safety enhancement, reduced fuel consumption, lower pollution levels, and the all-important decongestion of existing roads between the two cities.

Approximately 2 Railway Over Bridge, 25 Light Vehicular Underpass, 23 Vehicular Underpass, 21 Small Vehicular Underpass and 363 Culverts type structures are proposed along the project stretch for free passage to locals and avoid any impact on local hydrology.

The Multi-Faceted Significance:

  • Unlocking Economic Growth: Beyond reducing travel time from 4.0 to 2.0 hours, the project caters to existing and future industrial establishments like KINFRA. The link it creates between Kozhikode and Chennai ports propels trade and commerce, promising a surge in economic growth.
  • A Safer Route: This Greenfield alignment optimally considers existing settlements, religious sites, and plantations. By creating a new route, it mitigates the socio-economic impacts that expanding the existing road might have caused.
  • Environmental Stewardship: The project acknowledges the impact of construction on the environment, with around 1,22,470 trees to be felled within the proposed Right of Way. However, this impact is offset through compensatory planting and the use of native plant species to enrich biodiversity.
  • Strengthening Regional Connectivity: Through its design, the project doesn’t just link two cities – it connects 39 villages, opening up a world of possibilities for these communities.
  • A Catalyst for Progress: Decongestion of existing routes, reduction in accidents, and more efficient movement of freight and passenger vehicles hold the promise of a holistic regional development.
  • Greenfield Approach: The project’s crow-flight alignment, devoid of tunnels and with minimal built-up areas, ensures feasible engineering, cost-effectiveness, and limited impact on the environment and local communities.
