History of Yamuna Express Highway / Expressway

For constructing the Yamuna Expressway Project and related development in the region, the Government of Uttar Pradesh had constituted TEA (Taj Expressway Industrial Development Authority) under Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development(UPIAD) Act, 1976 . The main role of the former TEA (now Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority), inter alia, included:

  • Construction of Yamuna Expressway
  • Land acquisition for construction of Expressway and area development
  • Preparation of Master plan/Zonal plan for planned development along the Expressway
  • Construction of feeder roads, Drainage, , electrification and other facilities in the area

It was emerged with the idea of reducing the travel time between Agra and Delhi NCR . The project was initiated by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2001. But the construction could not start because of regular change of Uttar Pradesh state government till 2003 and also it was not financially feasible back in 2003. The project was restarted in 2007 when former Chief Mayawati came back in power in 2007 elections and was renamed from Taj Expressway to Yamuna Expressway in 2008.
