Introduction to the Chennai Port Maduravoyal Expressway

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently developing the Chennai Port – Maduravoyal Expressway, a 19.881 km, 4 lane, double-tiered expressway in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This access-controlled highway will follow a route along the Cooum River and NH-4, and will feature 7 on-ramps for entry and 6 off-ramps for exit. The expressway is being built with the goal of improving transportation and connectivity in the region.

Funding and Development Model

The Chennai Port Maduravoyal Expressway is estimated to cost a total of Rs. 5,855 crore. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022. At this time, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the expressway is not publicly available. However, NHAI did invite tenders for the construction of the expressway in July 2022, and the project will be developed using the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model.

Route Map and Packages of Chennai Port Maduravoyal Expressway

The expressway has been divided into 4 civil packages, with each package having a deadline of 910 days (2.5 years). The bidding process for each package is currently underway, and the contractors for each package have not yet been announced. A PDF route map for the Chennai Port – Maduravoyal Expressway has not yet been made available to the public. However, a map of the route can be found in NHAI’s tender documents.

Chennai Port Maduravoyal Expressway Route Map

The expressway has been divided into following 4 packages:

Package 1 (4.262 km): Connecting km 0.342 to km 4.604

Package 2 (5.096 km): Connecting km 4.604 to km 9.700

Package 3 (4.485 km): Connecting km 9.700 to km 14.185

Package 4 (6.038 km): Connecting km 14.185 to km 20.223

Design Capacity and Expected Traffic

When completed, the expressway is expected to have a design capacity to handle 40,000 passenger cars per day. This will greatly improve transportation and connectivity in the region, and is expected to reduce congestion and travel time for commuters.

Construction Timeline and Progress Updates
