The 1,271 km long NHAI-approved Surat Chennai Expressway is a six-lane, partially access-controlled motorway. To connect the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, the expressway’s alignment will pass through cities like Nasik, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Kalaburgi, Kurnool, Kadappa, and Tirupati.

The term “expressway” for this project is ambiguous. The project is a combination of 2 partially access-controlled economic corridors with greenfield and brownfield-upgraded sections:
A. 564 kilometers : Surat – Nashik – Ahmednagar – Solapur Economic Corridor
B. 707 kilometers : Solapur – Kurnool – Chennai Economic Corridor

Greenfield Sections of Surat Chennai Expressway
- (Economic Corridor) EC-413: Surat – Nashik – Ahmednagar section in Gujarat and Maharashtra (290.70 kilometers). Its DPR was prepared by Hyderabad based Aarvee Associates – Nag Infrastructure Engineers & Consultant JV
- (Economic Corridor) EC-408: Akkalkot – Mahabubnagar section in Maharashtra – Karnataka – Telangana (230 kilometers)
The rest of the stretch along the corridor would be upgraded and improved by widening the existing two-lane roads into a four-lane highway.
