The Delhi –Amritsar– Katra ( DAK ) expressway project is a 650 kms long, 4-lane access-controlled road that connects Jasaur Kheri in Jhajjar district, near Delhi with Katra, north of Jammu city. It is a mix of brownfield and greenfield project that was first announced in 2016, with its Detailed Project Report ( DPR )’ being finalized in 2019.

The project’s Phase 1 involves constructing a 397.7 km long greenfield expressway between Delhi, Ludhiana & Gurdaspur and a 99 km long spur connecting Nakodar to Amritsar. The project has been divided into 18 tenders or sections with a 2year deadline. Its estimated cost is; Rs 25,000 crore, with a completion deadline of December 2025. The project model is Hybrid Annuity Model ( HAM ), and the project is currently under construction, under bidding and land acquisition..

Anji Khad Cable Bridge

The Anji Khad Bridge is a cable- stayed bridge currently under construction in Jammu & Kashmir on the Jammu – Baramulla rail line. The bridge is being built by by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) at an estimated cost of Rs 435 crore and has been under construction since March 2017. The 473.25m long bridge is expected to be completed by byAugust 2023 and will consist of 3 spans of 331m over the Anji River. Once completed, it will be’ the first cable-stayed railway bridge in the country and will consist of 96 cables made in Slovakia. The bridge will be a critical piece of the Katra-Reasi section.

Reasi Railway Station

All India Institute of Medical Sciences ( AIIMS ), Jammu campus is spread across 226.84 acres , located at National Highway 44. This AIIMS campus is basically divided into two areas -North Campus and South Campus. The North Campus, covering 96.90 acres, houses hospitals &academic buildings, while the the South Campus, covering 129.95 acres, has staff housing and hostels. Almost 95% of the civil work on the prestigious project has been completed, and the remaining work is expected to be completed within six months.

The national-level healthcare facility is expected to be commissioned by May 2023, while Phase 2 is expected to be completed by 2025. The proposal for the establishment of AIIMS Jammu was approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2019 under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, and the project was entrusted to the Central Public Works Department CPWD for execution.

The total cost of the project; including medical equipment and furniture, is Rs. 1661 crore. The foundation’ stone for this project was laid by PM Narendra Modi on 3 February ’19.

Z Morh Tunnel

The Z-Morh Tunnel is a 6.5 km two-lane road project being constructed by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) on the Srinagar-Leh Highway in Jammu and Kashmir. The tunnel is being built via the NATM tunneling method at a cost of Rs. 2378 crore to ensure all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Sonamarg, and Kargil in Ladakh.

The project’s foundation stone was laid in 2012 and is expected to be completed and opened in 2024. The civil construction of the project was awarded to APCO Infratech by NHIDCL after re-tendering in 2019, which is being executed under Apco Shri Amarnathji Tunnelway Private Limited (ASATPL).

USBRL Project

The Indian Railways is undertaking its most challenging railroad project since independence, declared a National Project in March 2002. The project involves several institutions, including IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, GSI, and DRDO, in project planning and implementation. The challenging hilly terrain of the Himalayas requires numerous tunnels and bridges to be built, and over 200 km of approach roads with 320 tiny bridges have been constructed to reach the construction site.

The project will include the world’s highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge, which is nearing completion and will be 359 meters above the riverbed, 35 meters higher than the Eiffel Tower. The Anji Khad bridge, India’s first cable-stayed Railway Bridge, is also part of this project and is being built at a height of 331 meters above the riverbed to connect Katra with Reasi in the Kashmir rail link project.

Kiru Hydro Electric Project

The Kiru hydroelectric power project is being constructed near the villages of Patharnakki and Kiru in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir. It will include the construction of a concrete gravity dam on the Chenab River with a height of 135m from the deepest foundation level and 123m from the river bed level. The reservoir will be 6.5km-long and 1.03km² in area, and the project will have a catchment area of 10,225km².

The power plant will comprise four Vertical Francis turbines with a capacity of 156MW each, and it will bring electricity to the rural area, reducing the locals’ dependency on alternative sources of energy. The project is expected to address the energy deficiency in the Northern region of India while improving transportation, education, medical, and road transportation network in the region.

Zojila Tunnel

The Zoji La Tunnel is a 14.2 km long road tunnel currently under construction in the Himalayas. The horseshoe-shaped tunnel is designed to be 9.5 m wide and 7.57 m high and will have two lanes. It passes through the Zoji La pass between Sonmarg and Drass town in Kargil district of the Indian union Territory of Ladakh. With an estimated cost of INR8,308 (~US$1.04 billion), the tunnel is being constructed with the New Austrian tunneling method and will be equipped with advanced features such as a smart SCADA system, CCTV, radio control, ventilation, and uninterrupted power supply.

Together with the Z-Morh Tunnel, the Zoji La Tunnel will provide year-round connectivity to Ladakh and Baltal, reduce travel time to just 15 minutes, boost tourism and economy, and enhance Indian Military logistics. The project is part of the construction of 31 road tunnels, 20 in J&K and 11 in Ladakh, at a total cost of INR1.4 lakh crore (~US$17.5 billion).

Jammu Srinagar Semi Ring Road Project

Next on the list is Jammu Sri nagar Semi Ring Road Project. It’s currently under construction and will be a 60.84-kilometer long four-lane Semi-Ring Road around Srinagar city, but they’re doing it in two phases.

Phase-I is going to be a 42-kilometer stretch that connects Galandar near Pampore town to Sumbal in Bandipora district. And, in Phase-II, they’re going to build an additional 18.84-kilometer’ four-lane road.

This project is super-important because it’s going to help reduce the vehicular rush in Sri Nagar city. Traffic is a major problem there, causing frequent traffic jams, & this new road will help alleviate that issue. The Housing and Urban Development Department of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir has proposed a light rail transit (LRT) system known as Jammu Light Metro (Metrolite), which consists of 2 lines and 40 stations. The Jammu Metro Phase 1 project will cover 23 km &will consist of 2 elevated lines with 22 stations, which will form an interchange at Exhibition Grounds. Phase 2 will involve extending both lines.

In February 2020, the Administrative Council of the Union Territory approved the engagement of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to assist with the project’s appraisal and approval of the Detailed Project Report ( DPR) by the central government and any possible external funding.

The Jammu Metrolite projectPhase 1 project has an estimated cost of Rs 4825 crore and an estimated ridership of 2 lacs in 2027. Line-1 will run from Bantalab to Greater Kailash, covering 17 km with 17 stations, while Line-2 will run from Udheywala to Exhibition Ground, covering 6 km with 6 stations. The proposed Phase 2 involves extending Line-1 from Greater Kailash to Bari Brahmana Railway Station, covering 6 km with 5 stations, and extending Line-2 from Exhibition Ground to Satwari Chowk, covering 14.5 kms with 12 stations.

Srinagar Metrolite

The Housing and Urban Development Department of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir has proposed the Srinagar Light Metro (Metrolite) system, which will consist of 2 lines and 24 stations. In February 2020, the union territory’s Administrative Council approved in-principle to engage the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to assist with the appraisal & approval of its Phase 1 project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) by the central government and for any possible external funding.

The estimated project cost for Phase 1 of the SrinagarMetro is Rs 5734 crore, with an estimated ridership of 2 lakh in 2027. Line-1, which is planned to be extended to Pampore Bus stand in Phase 2, will run from Indra Nagar to HMT Junction, covering a distance of 12.5 km with 12 elevated stations. Line-2, which is planned to be extended to Srinagar Airport in Phase 2, will run from Hazuri Bagh to Osmanabad, also covering a distance of 12.5 km with 12 elevated stations.
