The VCIC supports the Indian government’s efforts to develop industrial corridors of international standards to expand the manufacturing and services sectors and create modern urban centers with state-of-the-art infrastructure. ADB has identified four industrial nodes as integral components of the economic corridor development, which are the Visakhapatnam, Machilipatnam, Donakonda, and Yerpedu-Srikalahasti nodes. The project will consist of three sections, including a brownfield upgrade from Bengaluru to Kodikonda, a greenfield section from Kodikonda to Addanki, and another brownfield upgrade from Addanki to Vijaywada. The lanes will be 3.75m wide, with 3m paved or 2m unpaved shoulders and a 19.50m depressed median.

The project was approved for construction under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase 1 program, and its estimated cost is Rs. 3,197.56 crore. The project is currently in the land acquisition and bidding stage, and the deadline for completion is December 2024. The NHAI owns the project, which follows the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) model.

The total area of land acquisition is 1073.53 hectares, out of which 989.06 hectares are private land. The proposed project will have 9 major bridges, 45 minor bridges, 1 ROB, 23 VUP, 10 LVUP, 47 SVUP, and 61 PUPs. The project will require a right of way of 60 meters. The total project cost, including land, is estimated to be approximately Rs. 3554.35 crores.

The project, known as Package III, will run from Chinna Autupalli village (Km 0.000) to Gollapudi village (Km 30.000) in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. The project is titled “Six Laning of Vijayawada Bypass from China Autupalli (Design Ch.0.000) to Gollapudi (Design Ch.30.000) in Vijayawada – Gundugolanu section of NH-16 in the State of Andhra Pradesh under Bharatmala Pariyojana on Hybrid Annuity Mode” and costs INR 1225 crores.

The conversion of the stretch into a 6-lane highway is expected to reduce traffic and pollution in Vijayawada, while also saving time and distance for road users. The Krishna district, which has an area of 8,727 km2 and a population of 45,29,009 as per 2011 census of India, is located in the Coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh and is bordered by West Godavari, the Bay of Bengal, Guntur, and Telangana.

The project is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I program, with financing from the Asian Development Bank, aimed at improving freight movement and boosting exports. The National Highways Authority of India is overseeing the project, with Yongma Engineering Co. Ltd. and Arkitechno Consultants preparing the detailed project report.

The project is being constructed using the Hybrid Annuity Mode and is expected to be completed by 2025. Upon completion, the highway will reduce travel time from 14 hours to about 7 hours, and the distance from Raipur to Vizag will decrease from 590 km to 464 km. The greenfield alignment passes through Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh. Throughout its stretch, the expressway will cover 124.611 km in Chhattisgarh, 262.211 km Odisha, and 99.629 km in Andhra Pradesh.
