1. The Great Man Made River Mega Project , Libya

Since 1985, the “Great Man-Made River” (GMR) has been a work in progress. It is still considered the world’s largest irrigation project, and when completed, it would deliver water to over 350,000 acres of agricultural land. It will not only help Libyan farmers with their crops, but it will also improve access to safe drinking water in the majority of Libya’s cities.

The GMR’s water supply is the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, which is the world’s largest known fossil water aquifer system. The project is expected to be completed in 2030.

2. Chuo Shinkansen High Speed Railway Project, Japan

Japan’s Linear Chuo Shinkansen high-speed train line, officially dubbed the Linear Chuo Shinkansen, will transport passengers 286 kilometers from Tokyo to Nagoya in about 40 minutes. The trains on this line will travel at a speed of about 313 mph and will be based on the country’s world-leading Superconducting Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) system.

The new line will be underground for around 86 percent of its length, necessitating major tunnel construction. Before construction on extending the line to Osaka proceeds, the project is expected to be completed by 2027.

Jubail II, a planned industrial metropolis in Saudi Arabia, has been in the works for almost 22 years. Jubail II will have 100 industrial plants, miles of railways, motorways, and roads, an 800,000 cubic meter water desalination facility (one of the world’s largest), and an oil refinery capable of producing 350,000 barrels per day when it is finished in 2024. To address the issue, China’s government has set aside funds for the construction of three massive canals. Each canal will be about 600 miles long, carrying water from China’s three main rivers to the country’s northern areas. According to Chinese sources, the project will take little over fifty years to complete and will provide 44.6 billion cubic meters of water each year.
