Bhopal-Kanpur Economic Corridor – Overview and Current Progress

The Bhopal Kanpur Economic Corridor, also known as the Bhopal-Kanpur Expressway, spans a distance of 526 kilometers. This approved road project, under the supervision of NHAI, will feature 4 lanes and a semi access-controlled design. It will connect the states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
As part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase I program, construction is underway for this brownfield corridor, which includes the development of new greenfield sections. The primary objective of the project is to enhance the efficiency of freight movement, particularly for cement and minerals, while also boosting exports.
The announcement of the project was made by Nitin Gadkari in January 2023. Notably, one of the greenfield sections includes the ‘Sagar Link Road,’ which will reduce the distance between Bhopal and Kanpur by 21 kilometers.
Although the Detailed Project Report (DPR) from NHAI is not currently available online, the project is scheduled for completion by 2026. Its aim is to significantly reduce the travel time between Bhopal and Kanpur from the current 15 hours to 7 hours.
