The 8-lane, access-controlled Delhi Mumbai Expressway (DME) project, which runs 1350 kilometers and connects DND in Delhi with JNPT in Mumbai, is currently under construction. It has been designed with a 120 km/h speed limit with the option to add 12 lanes in the future.
This new greenfield expressway was approved for construction under the Bharatmala Pariyojana program in 2017, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone on March 9, 2019.

Route Alignment of Delhi Mumbai Expressway
The entire expressway has been further divided into 4 sections with a total of 52 tenders/packages. Each package has a 24-month (2-year) deadline.
- DND – Faridabad – Ballabhgarh – Sohna: 59 kilometers with 3 Construction Packages
- Sohna – Vadodara: 844 kilometers with 31 Construction Packages
- Vadodara – Virar: (354 kilometers with 13 Construction Packages
- Virar – JNPT: 92 kilometers with 5 Construction Packages

Spur Details of Delhi Mumbai Expressway
The Delhi Mumbai Expressway expressway will eventually have a number of spurs to increase connectivity. A few of them include:
67 kilometer 4 lane Jaipur Spur from Bandikui (chainage 168.550). Current Status: Land acquisition started in April 2021. GR Infraprojects received LOA for its construction in March 2022.
30-kilometer 6-lane connectivity to Noida’s Jewar International Airport from DND-Faridabad-Ballabhagh Bypass KMP Link Spur. Current Status: APCO Infratech is the lowest bidder.
130 kilometer 4 lane Ujjain Spur connecting Garoth – Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Current Status: 3 contracts were awarded in February 2022 to GHV India (PKG1), Ravi Infrabuild Projects (PKG 2), and MKC Infrastructures (PKG 3)
The expressway with closed tolling system will connect the 5 states of India which includes Haryana (80 km), Rajasthan (380 km), Madhya Pradesh (370 km), Gujarat (300 km) and Maharashtra (120 km). The New industrial townships and Smart Cities have been planned along the route of Mumbai Delhi Expressway. 92 way side amenities have been planned on either side of the under construction expressway at regular intervals of roughly 50 km.
Its route alignment reduces the distance between India’s capital Delhi and Mumbai by around 150 km and the travel time up to 13 hours from the current 24 hours. Besides that, after successful completion, the Mumbai Delhi Expressway will lead to considerable fuel savings, better ride quality and safety over the existing NH-48 (old NH-8) highway.

Current Construction Status of Mumbai Delhi Expressway
On their official website, NHAI provides a fantastic high-level monthly status report. The current situation as of May 11, 2021:
- Under Construction: 1172 km
- Awarded – Work Yet to Start: 165 km
- Under Bidding: 30 km
- DPR in Progress: 15 km
Compared to the other sections, the 844 km Sohna-Vadodara stretch is in a more advanced level of construction. The Vadodara – Virar section will feature two 4-lane extra-dosed bridges by Ashoka Buildcon on Package 4.
